Harrodsburg priest issues statement

August 05, 2003

The priest of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Harrodsburg says he is greatly saddened by the events unfolding at the General Convention.

"Personally, I am opposed to the election of Gene Robinson as Bishop," says Father Jeff Jones in a written statement hand delivered to The Advocate Messenger on Monday.

The rest of the statement reads as follows.

"Let me make myself perfectly clear. I do not turn away people from the church or deny them pastoral care based on their lifestyles, but at the same time, I may not condone their behavior. We are called to love one another as God loves us and therefore, all people should be loved and cared for. The election of Gene Robinson may cause fracture and exodus in the Episcopal Church. One thing I know for certain is that God and His love WILL be victorious."

In addition, Father Jones says a healing service will be held tonight at 6 p.m. at the church.

"It's for reconciliation," he says. "And for those who feel the need to pray."
