Help celebrate America's heroes

August 07, 2003

Dear Editor:

I am very pleased by the response we have received from the community to honor our service men and women. The initial idea of a parade has grown to a full day of celebration and appreciation with military ceremonies, patriotic music and speeches from notable dignitaries and performers.

We have chosen to call the event "Celebrating America's Heroes: Past and Present" to honor all of those who have served our country so proudly.

I want to remind everyone that the day of the event is Saturday, Sept. 6, and will kick off with a flag raising ceremony at Weisiger Park and the parade beginning at 10:30 a.m.

In addition to the support we have already received, we need the following assistance from the community. Any person who has or is currently serving in the military, widows, spouses, children or parents of deployed military personnel, re-enactors of the Civil War and Revolutionary War, and anyone else who has a link to military service and would like to participate in the parade, please contact Anne Winburn at the Heart of Danville. We want to get as many participants as possible, and you do not have to be a Boyle County resident to be in the parade. Please give us the opportunity to salute you. Also if you have or have access to antique military vehicles or equipment for use in the parade or display, we want to hear from you.

Persons wishing to make donations, need to contact Mike Qualls, commander of the American Legion Post 46, at 236-6824.

Thanks for your support and God Bless America.
