Inmate escapes from Casey jail

August 11, 2003

LIBERTY - An inmate reportedly broke out of Casey County Detention Center Friday evening, but information about the incident is sketchy.

Casey Jailer Tommy Miller is out of town until Tuesday and attempts this morning to get information from the jail were unsuccessful.

Dispatchers at the E911 office and the sheriff's department confirmed that an inmate had left the jail.

Deputy Sheriff Dennis Allen said that inmate Michael Wayne Craig left the jail sometime Friday and is considered a non-violent offender. Craig reportedly was in jail on forgery and other charges.

"There's no indication that he is armed or dangerous," said Allen.

Craig, 23, is 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds, according to a flyer posted in local businesses. He has short brown hair, brown eyes and a mustache.

Allen said county and local police officers searched for the escapee during the weekend. He said the jail was handling the search.

A state police dispatcher at Columbia Post had no information on the incident.
