My granddaughter, Cierra, is returning to Toliver Elementary School this week for her second-grade year. When she stopped by to show me her new school supplies, her eyes sparkled as we inspected every little pocket in her purple backpack.
She told me her favorite activity was writing stories and that she hoped that second grade was harder than first grade. Then the greatest statement came tumbling into the conversation: "I can't wait for school to start," she said. "They really love me over there." (Give her an "A" in self-esteem.)
Kudos to all the teachers and staff who create such an incredible atmosphere for our students. I have to believe that any academic goal would seem attainable in such an environment.
