Crisis center needs volunteers:

The Danville and Nicholasville offices of Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center need hospital advocacy volunteers.

Four days of free training will be held in Lexington from 5:30-8 p.m. Sept. 5; 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sept. 6; 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 13; and 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 20.

The training is comprehensive and presented in a casual style.

Upon successful completion, volunteers will:

n Meet victims of sexual assault at local hospitals or police stations in Boyle, Lincoln, Garrard, Mercer and Jessamine counties.

n Provide support and information to victims and their loved ones.

n Provide referrals for follow-up services.

n Assist with community awareness campaigns by distributing agency information or managing community information fair booths.

Wellness Weekend set for Aug. 23:

McDowell Wellness Center, 1107 Ben Ali Drive, will host Wellness Weekend from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Aug. 23. Free screenings for cholesterol, glucose, lung volume, height, weight, and body fat will be available. Participants can join the center on Aug. 23 without having to pay the enrollment fee. Refreshments will be served.

CCHS academic team recognized:

LIBERTY - The Casey County High School Academic Team was given medals Monday night by the Board of Education.

Recognized were Brian Strucker, captain; John Mark Russell, Jamie Salyers, Kendra Peak and Ryan Black, who were also on the Governor's Cup Team; and Amy Hatter, Shannon Pelley, Heather Cundiff, Jamin Cundiff, Patrick Helm, Zach Delp and Sarah Phelps.

Meetings:

Danville City Commission - 7 a.m. Thursday at city hall. Commissioners will discuss the sign ordinance.

Danville High School Gender Equity/Title IX Committee - 5 p.m. Wednesday in the school library.

Casey County Hospital Board of Trustees - 8 p.m. today in the hospital conference room. The agenda includes a progress report on the changeover in management and the financial report.|8/12/03***
