Garrard firefighters get rescue training

August 14, 2003

LANCASTER - Garrard County District 1 Fire Department sponsored an all-day rescue training on school bus accidents Aug. 2 at the fire station on Industry Road.

The morning was spent on classroom training by instructor Danny Cates, a lieutenant with District 1. Later, two school bus accidents were simulated.

Adults and children were made up to simulate victims. With a school bus turned on its side, the first accident was simulated with victims trapped inside. Camp Dick Fire/Rescue and Cartersville Fire/Rescue gained entry to the bus from the rear and the front using extrication equipment. Garrard County Emergency Medical Service then responded to triage and treated the victims trapped inside.

Crews from Garrard County District 1 Fire/Rescue and Lancaster Fire/Rescue worked the second simulation. They had to remove the victims through the top of the bus, which was on its side in a creek. Garrard County EMS treated the victims.
