Bush to blame for states' budget woes

August 14, 2003

Dear Editor:

I am astounded by the debacle currently unfolding in California. Even in light of our own state's current problems, the events surrounding the recall of Gov. Gray Davis are truly bizarre.

Our own budget problems and those of many other states, including those of California, can be laid directly at the feet of the Bush administration. The funding for massive tax cuts, military adventurism, the rebuilding of Iraq and the cost of maintaining a massive debt must come from somewhere, so aid to states is cut.

To add insult to injury, the conservatives, not content with stealing the 2000 presidential election, are now going after the most populace - and the most politically powerful - state. They are doing so via an obscure loophole and in an underhanded, less-straightforward way.

It seems that if the conservatives can't win by hook they will win by crook.

What ever happened to democracy?
