Casey jail inmate charged with escape:

LIBERTY - An inmate who walked away from Casey County Detention Center Aug. 8 has been charged with second-degree escape, court records show.

Michael Craig, 23, of 80 Cannon Road, Liberty, was apprehended Tuesday in Mercer County, four days after he allegedly ran out the door of the jail as it was opened for state inmates.

Craig, who has been in jail on forgery charges, is under a $10,000 bond.

Casey men charged with cultivation:

LIBERTY - Two men have been charged with marijuana cultivation, police records show.

Billy R. Cardwell of 4179 Contown Road was arrested Thursday night for allegedly cultivating more than five marijuana plants.

Deputy Sheriffs Dennis Allen and Bob Weddle made the arrest.

John Dickerson, 21, of 72 Bartle Heights also was charged Aug. 9 with marijuana cultivation, police said.

The marijuana was discovered Aug. 9 on Dickerson's property while police were searching for an escaped inmate from Casey County Detention Center, according to a report by Officer Brian Allen.


The two marijuana plants were growing in pots at the Dickerson residence, according to police.

Endangerment charge

filed against man:

LIBERTY - Leon Pettyjohn, 67, of 622 Hustonville St. was charged Aug. 9 with second-degree wanton endangerment after he allegedly pulled a hunting knife on a deputy sheriff, court records show.

Pettyjohn is accused of pulling the knife on special Deputy Sheriff Steve Burchell and using slanderous remarks toward the deputy, according to a report by Sheriff Jerry Coffman.

The suspect was released from custody on his own recognizance and will appear in Casey District Court at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Three incidents of forgery reported:

HARRODSBURG - City police are investigating three incidents of forged checks.

A forged check on the account of Cane Run Boat and Motor Sales was written to the Trading Post in Burgin on March 29 and reported on Aug. 8, according to police.

Wal-Mart of Harrodsburg reported a forged check for $130 was written July 13 on the account of Dora and Harold Proffitt.

Police were notified Monday.

A forged check was reported to police by personnel at Doc's Marathon at 620 S. College St.

The check was written on the account of Lawrence Kasperak of Crestwood.

The check was passed July 30 and reported to police Aug. 8.

Rolling roadblock stops biker:

HARRODSBURG - John M. Daugherty, 25, of Lexington is being held in the Boyle County Detention Center on $10,000 cash bond after he was apprehended on Aug. 8.

Harrodsburg police, with help from Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement and the Mercer County Sheriff's Department, stopped Daugherty, whom officers witnessed driving a dirt/road bike at College Street at Warwick Road.

Police report he was driving without lights and was not wearing a helmet.

Police were able to stop the driver without incident.

Daugherty is charged with third offense driving under the influence of intoxicants, license suspended by a DUI conviction, fleeing police, no helmet, no insurance, expired license plate, improper equipment and improper passing.

Man charged in

biting incident:

HARRODSBURG - Dennis Robert Whalen, 28, of 513 Marimon Ave. was arrested and jailed after he allegedly bit another man.

Whalen allegedly hit Jerry Todd Gritton, 35, of the same address with a telephone and bit him on the nose and both sides of the face.

Police said the victim had lacerations consistent with bite marks. |8/14/03***
