McConnell to present grant in Perryville

PERRYVILLE - Sen. Mitch McConnell will visit Perryville at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 25 to present a $248,000 grant to the Perryville Battlefield Preservation Association.

The presentation will take place in Baril Park behind Merchants' Row and will be followed by a reception in the Perryville Community Center. "We are genuinely pleased that he is taking time from his busy schedule to present the grant in person," said Clarence Wyatt, president of PEP. "We take that as an affirmation and validation of what we're trying to accomplish here."

"We greatly appreciate Sen. McConnell's support and are honored that he can make a personal visit to Perryville," said Stuart Sanders, director of the Perryville Battlefield Preservation Association. " This funding will help us begin the restoration of Merchants' Row, and Sen. McConnell's visit will give us the chance to introduce him to our restoration efforts."

McConnell secured the grant earlier this year through an Omnibus Appropriation. The grant monies will help cover costs associated with restoration of the Johnson House building at the corner of Buell Street (U.S. 68) and Second Street (U.S. 150). Once restored, the Johnson House will house office space and a town visitor's center and museum.

The Johnson House is one of nearly a dozen buildings along Merchants' Row and other parts of Perryville that the PBPA has worked to protect and restore.|8/18/03***
