St. Jude walk-a-thon set:

CRAB ORCHARD - The St. Jude Children's Hospital Walk-A-Thon will be 8-10 a.m. Sept. 6 at Crab Orchard Cemetery. Anyone interested in walking for cancer research dollars for children may call Diana Messer at (606) 355-2129 or 355-2249 for donation envelopes.

Two blood drives scheduled:

American Red Cross blood drives will be held next week in Harrodsburg and Danville.

The one in Harrodsburg will be from 1-6 p.m. Tuesday at Lions Park Community Center. The drive is part of the Blood Cup Challenge. Donors may donate a pint of blood and vote for their favorite team, University of Kentucky or University of Louisville. T-shirts will be given away. The winning team will be given the Blood Cup at the Aug. 31 football game.

The drive in Danville will be from 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at National Cash Advance in Danville Manor Shopping Center. Donors will be given a gift and will be eligible for door prizes, including a DVD player from Rent -A-Center, Dale Earnhardt pocket knives from National Cash Advance, and a gift certificate from Family Pet Store.


Danville schools plan early release:

Danville schools will hold their first early release day of the year Aug 29.

Classes at Hogsett, Jennie Rogers and Toliver elementary schools and at Bate Middle School will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m., and classes at Danville High School will be dismissed at noon. Lunch will be served at all elementary schools; brunch will be served at Bate; and breakfast only will be served at the high school.

Faculty at each school will spend the rest of the day working on specific projects aimed at improving instruction, student performance and curriculum.
