August 22, 2003

Garrard County won two close games for its first win of the season, beating Madison Central 25-20, 25-23 Thursday at Richmond.

"They were good games for both teams," Garrard coach Dennis Custard said.

Custard said two seniors helped make the difference for Garrard (1-3).

"Andrea Adams and Kia Howard played well for us. Our senior leaders stepped up and did a good job," he said.

Woodford County 25-25, Boyle County 17-15 - At Versailles, Boyle dropped a two-game decision, but coach Dana Stigall said her team gave a good effort against the defending 7th Region champion.

"The girls fought hard against a good Woodford team," Stigall said. "I think we made a few points that were very good plays.

"We do have a short team, with 5-5 being our average height, but that doesn't mean we can't beat some big teams."

Stigall said Emily Rigney scored a service block against a Woodford girl several inches taller than her. Meagan Lankford and Rachel Staub led Boyle with three kills each, and Kate Edmiston had two kills.
