Motorcycle charity Poker Run is Saturday

August 29, 2003

Roadways will rumble to life Saturday as hundreds of motorcyclists rev up for Touchstone Energy's annual Motorcycle Charity Poker Run. The event, created to raise money for the WHAS Crusade for Children, kicks off its fourth installment at South Kentucky RECC in Somerset. Festivities begin at 12:30 p.m.

Spearheaded by Frank Owen Brockman, safety and law coordinator for Farmers RECC, the annual event has enjoyed considerable growth with each passing year.

"It's a unique and special event," said Brockman. "Each year, we've seen it double in size."

Participants from all over the Midwest and Southeast (including Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee and North Carolina) will descend upon Somerset to kick the festivities in gear, then blaze a trail to Inter-County Energy in Danville, Blue Grass Energy in Lawrenceburg, Salt River Electric in Shepherdsville and finally, wrap up their journey at Elizabethtown's Nolin RECC.

While fellowship, spectacular scenery and love for the open road are all big factors in luring riders to the event, Brockman says that, ultimately, participants get involved because they want to contribute to a good cause.

"We have raised $11,000 in three years for Crusade for Children," he said. "To see all these bikers turn out for the kids is really special, and it fits with one of our key Touchstone Energy values of commitment to our communities."

One of Touchstone Energy's most anticipated events, the Motorcycle Charity Poker Run helps contribute funds that serve the special needs of children in all 120 counties in Kentucky, and more than 50 counties in Indiana.
