August 31, 2003

MONTICELLO - A big third quarter was enough to push Mercer County past host Wayne County 41-27 Friday.

Mercer (1-1) trailed 13-10 at halftime, but scored 24 points in the third quarter to gain a lead it would not relinquish.

Andrew McCloud scored two of his four touchdowns in the third, and senior Seth Lamar returned an interception 27 yards for another score.

McCloud scored on runs of 3, 52 and 10 yards and also returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown. Jason Chadwick had two field goals (from 30 and 24 yards) and connected on all five of his extra point attempts.

McCloud finished with 144 yards rushing on 25 carries as Mercer totaled 182 yards rushing.

Michael Bottoms was 3-for-9 for 51 yards in his second game as Mercer's quarterback, and also had six carries for 25 yards. Bottoms' favorite target was Lamar, who caught two passes for 43 yards. Jordan Lyons had the other catch for eight yards.

Wayne outgained Mercer 394 to 233, including 202 yards passing. But four turnovers cost Wayne several chances to score.

Jordan Lyons led Mercer with 14 tackles, while his brother John Lyons had 13. Freshman Blake Arnold had an interception and two deflections, while Brandon Scheller had a fumble recovery despite an injured shoulder.
