Centre beats Principia

September 08, 2003

Centre College scored off two corner kicks by Chris Combs in a three-minute span of the second half to beat Principia 3-1 Sunday in the 14th annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic.

Combs, a Danville High School product, was named the most outstanding offensive player in the tournament. Teammate Rhodes Thompson earned the award for the top defensive player.

"We knew Principia would be a tough opponent for us," said Centre coach Jeb Burch. "We had a little bad luck in the first half, but we really played well the second half."

Centre outshot Principia 33-4, but the first half was scoreless. The Colonels had two balls go off the crossbar in the first 10 minutes.

"Our defense really was not tested in the first half, but we couldn't score. Our players were a little frustrated at halftime," Burch said.

Combs sent his corner kick to Patrick Foley and Todd Davis scored off the deflection. Three minutes later Thompson headed a corner kick from Combs into the goal for a 2-0 lead.

After Principia got its only goal, the Colonels added another score with about 20 minutes left when Stan Simek's cross was put in by Matt Walksler.

"We got great outside mid play again and that has become a strength of our team," Burch said. "That gives us a whole new dimension with our play."

The Colonels will play again Saturday when they host Maryville University out of St. Louis at 1:30 p.m.
