Support for youth livestock sale appreciated

September 09, 2003

Dear Editor:

It seems to me the plea expressed for community support of the 4-H and FFA members involved in the Investment in Youth Sale did not fall upon deaf ears. In fact, people from all walks of life turned out in droves to fill the Boyle County Stock Yards to full capacity on Thursday night!

We were fortunate to have representatives from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.K. College of Agriculture present at the sale, not to mention representatives from many influential businesses in the industry.

Consequently, as important as those individuals are to agriculture, the ones most appreciated were those who made both individual and company contributions toward the purchase of animals. Indeed, these youth involved in agrarian endeavors certainly have many "Friends in Boyle County" and in the surrounding communities.

As a former member of both 4-H and FFA, it is my wish to express my most sincere appreciation to all of the individuals and businesses who came together to make the Investment in Youth Sale a great success.

The opening verse of the FFA Creed reads, "I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds; achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturalists, with the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us through the struggles of former years."

All of these words rang true this past Thursday night. Buyers worried not about saying inspiring words to these youth, but voiced their support with their wallets.

Accomplishments made by the youth and their animals throughout the show season were indeed rewarded! The promise of another year of project experience was guaranteed. Hopes for future academic endeavors were further secured. All of this was because of a generous community who cares deeply about the future of these youth and the future they represent. Many, many thanks to all who contributed in any way to the success of this sale!
