GRAVEL SWITCH - Gravel Switch fire department personnel were called to a barn fire on property owned by Michael Hays on KY 243 near Forkland this morning, and the Kentucky State Police arson investigation team has been summoned.
The barn and surrounding property is leased to a tenant named Lester Smothers. Hays and Smothers filed a lease beginning June 1 and expiring May 31, 2013, in the Casey County Clerk's office recently, and the barn is part of the property seized by law enforcement officials Monday, according to KSP officials.
The barn was full of hay bales, according to firefighters on the scene. Anthony Clarkson, a Gravel Switch firefighter, said his unit had been instructed by KSP to allow the bales to smolder pending arrival of the arson investigation unit.
KSP Sergeant Monte Owens said the fire was reported to the arson unit early this morning, but could not say who reported the fire. He did say a unit from KSP was on its way to the scene of the fire but had not arrived as of 10:30 a.m.
