'Flat' Boyle triumphs

September 12, 2003

Boyle County's girls soccer team scored early and was able to use that momentum to defeat visiting Western Hills 3-1 here Thursday.

The Rebels (3-2-2) started out "flat and lethargic" according to coach Brian Deem, but it didn't take long for Boyle to get on the board.

Freshman Sarah Hall scored to the upper right corner in the sixth minute, putting Boyle up 1-0. With about eight minutes to go in the first half, senior Joanna Frauenhoffer scored off a combination play to push the Rebels to a 2-0 halftime lead.

Boyle stretched that lead out even further in the 60th minute. Sophomore Lydia Hignite had a breakaway opportunity, but was tripped in the box. Frauenhoffer hit the penalty kick, giving Boyle a 3-0 lead.

Western Hills scored its only goal in the final five minutes. Boyle outshot Western Hills 20-10 in the game.

Deem said he was pleased with his team's defense, calling it "intense," and said overall he was happy with how the Rebels did.

"I was pleased with the performance, but I was not pleased with the way we prepared," Deem said. "We were very vulnerable, yet we still did find a way to get it done tonight. The girls played fairly hard, and we were lucky that we got on top early and that gave us some momentum.

"We've still got a long way to go, and we're going to keep working to improve."

Boyle hosts Marion County at 5 p.m. Saturday in its next game.
