Centre wins Colonel Classic

Centre College won the fifth game 16-14 to beat Anderson College here Sunday and win the Colonel Classic.

Centre volleyball coach Stephanie Dragan's team won all four matches in the invitational. The Colonels beat Anderson 30-22, 30-27, 27-30, 27-30, 16-14.

"I've nicknamed them the 'Cardiac Kids' because of the way they come back," said Dragan. "We had to play an outstanding match against a good team to win. I could not be more proud of them."

Cate Guthrie was named the tournament's most valuable player. She had 13 kills, four assists and 11 digs against Anderson after getting 12 kills and eight digs in a 30-27, 30-21, 30-27 victory over LaGrange College earlier Sunday.


Kate Bennett had 14 kills and four digs against Anderson and 11 kills and one assist against LaGrange.

"They played great," Dragan said. "Each played brilliantly for us and really had an impact in our win."

So did Leah Ballinger. She had 32 assists and 13 digs against LaGrange before coming up with a triple-double - 10 kills, 56 assists and 25 digs - in the win over Anderson.

"A triple-double is very rare," Dragan said. "She just did everything she could to help us win."

The Colonels also got big efforts from Adair Howell and Whitney Faust against Anderson. Howell had 13 kills and three digs while Faust had 21 kills, two assists and seven digs.

Women's Soccer

At Maryville, Tenn., the Colonels got a goal from Katie McGinty in the 55th minute to beat host Maryville College 1-0.

Goalkeeper Jessica Chisley had eight saves for Centre (2-0-1), which outshot the home team 26-9 and had 12 corner kicks to three for Maryville.

"We came back the second half with a more direct attack that created more opportunities for us," Centre coach Gina Nicoletti said.
