Habitat for Humanity is a Christian, ecumenical, non-profit ministry. In the United States and in 81 countries and six continents around the world, it builds homes with and for people who could not otherwise afford them.
Our local affiliate, Boyle County Habitat for Humanity, secured its charter in 1990 and began building homes in Danville, Junction City, Perryville and Gravel Switch at a rate of one house a year. Three years ago, however, Boyle Habitat became a United Way agency. Since then, with the help of United Way funding, we have been able to build two houses a year, bringing our current total to 20 houses. That's an increase of 100 percent!
These affordable homes are paid for by the homeowners with a 20-year mortgage, and the homeowners become taxpaying citizens. In addition, because of Habitat's tithing program, we also have built an equal number of homes in foreign countries. That means a dramatic leap in the quality of life for 40 families, both in the present and for the future. Without United Way's help, this increase would not have been possible.
