Garrard boys improve to 10-0

September 21, 2003

Garrard County's boys improved to 10-0 on the season after defeating Taylor County 3-1 Saturday at Lancaster.

The game was a make-up date after the teams' earlier game was postponed Sept. 2.

Jacob Denny had a first-half goal and a second-half assist for Garrard.

Denny's goal was the only one of the first half as the Golden Lions went to the break up 1-0 over the Cardinals (5-6).

Brandon Merriman scored the first second-half goal before Taylor cut the deficit to 2-1 with 20 minutes to play.

Will Keeton answered with Garrard's final goal in the 65th minute.

Zach Doan and Micah Smith each had assists as Garrard outshot Taylor 32-17.

"Brandon Merriman had a really good game as he hustled all over the field," Garrard coach Jon Martin said.

"My defensive four of Zach Doan, Malcolm Smith, Will Stevens and Kyle Ayres played an exceptional game, knocking Taylor County's forwards and midfielders off-balance repeatedly."

Model 1, Danville 0 - At Danville, Model made one second-half goal stand up against the Admirals Saturday.

Model (6-1-2) and Danville (5-5-1) played to a scoreless first half, but the Patriots took the lead just a short time into the second half.

The Patriots scored in the 42nd minute, and it was the only goal they would need.

"It was disappointing," Danville coach Marty Sullivan said.

"We all had opportunities today. Rosa (Magana) played her best game of the year and (goalkeeper) Liz (Ruth) did a real good job. Model's a good team, but we just didn't take advantage when we could have."

Model held a 19-12 advantage in shots.
