Scholar to discuss the heroics of Homer:

Centre College will sponsor a free public lecture on the Greek poet Homer by noted scholar Donald Lateiner. Lateiner's talk, "Homeric Heroics: Honor and Insult," will take place 7 p.m. Monday in Weisiger Theatre on campus.

The lecture has been specially designed for the Humanities program at Centre, a two-term freshmen course sequence that begins with the classical world and focuses on developing the critical skills necessary to understand, appreciate and judge works of literature, art, drama, philosophy and music.

Dr. James V. Morrison, chair of Classics at Centre comments, "Don Lateiner is an international scholar, a dedicated teacher and a dynamic lecturer. Centre is extremely fortunate to have him come to speak to us. And he's the only one I know who is an expert on the sneeze in antiquity!"

Lateiner teaches humanities, history and classics courses at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, where he holds the John R. Wright Chair of Humanities and Greek. He earned an A.B. degree from the University of Chicago in history, an M.A. degree from Cornell University (also in history) and a Ph.D. from Stanford University in classics.

Lateiner teaches ancient Greek and Latin, archaeology and ancient history, as well as literature in translation and world folklore. He's published books and articles on Greek history, historiography, oratory, Greek and Latin epic poetry and prose fiction, and Latin lyric poetry.
