Madness tickets available on Oct. 11

LEXINGTON - Kentucky coach Tubby Smith will unveil his 2003-2004 basketball team during UK's 22nd annual Big Blue Madness Oct. 17.

The Wildcats, who were ranked No. 1 going into last year's NCAA Tournament, are coming off a 32-4 season that saw them go undefeated in Southeastern Conference regular-season play. They also won the SEC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Midwest Region final.

Smith returns three starters - Gerald Fitch, Erik Daniels and Chuck Hayes - along with sixth man Cliff Hawkins off last year's team.

The Memorial Coliseum doors will open at 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 17. The event will be carried live throughout the state on UKTV Network.


Big Blue Madness tickets will be available Oct. 11 at 9 a.m. at the Memorial Coliseum ticket office. Tickets will also be available via the Internet at that same time. Internet tickets have a $2 service fee per order. There is a limit of two tickets per person for both in-person and Internet orders.

The Wildcats' Blue/White Scrimmage is set for 2 p.m. Oct. 25 at Memorial Coliseum. Tickets ($5) are currently on sale at the Memorial Coliseum ticket office or online at

JV team falls: The UK junior varsity football team lost 17-16 to Georgia Military Thursday at Commonwealth Stadium.

Monquantae Gibson scored on a 3-yard run with 1:18 left to make it 17-16, but kicker Justin Hutton's extra point try hit the right upright and bounced away. Hutton had made a 27-yard field goal earlier in the fourth quarter.

Gibson, a redshirt freshman tailback, gained 138 yards on 20 carries. He also had three catches for 27 yards.

Quarterback Trey Barclay was 2-for-10 passing for 58 yards and Rocco Maragas was 4-for-8 for 35 yards.

Freshman linebacker Brad Booker had 18 tackles to lead the defense.
