Boyle's Piper wins at Frankfort

October 05, 2003

FRANKFORT - Abby Piper of Boyle County won the girls varsity race at the Capitol View Classic, passing her chief competitor about halfway through the race and keeping her at bay.

Kelly Jameson and Kelsey Barbato of Boyle finished sixth and ninth, respectively, to help the Lady Rebels to a second-place team finish. They scored 37 points, just three more than first-place North Hardin.

Piper won with a time of 21 minutes, 11 seconds after passing Lisa Unger of Frankfort near the midpoint of the extremely unlevel course.

"I passed her with a lot of conviction," Piper said. "From there I knew I had to dig deep and keep on running.

"It was the first time I've actually had a chance at winning but not really knowing that I had it."

Patrick Morgan was third and Mason Glass was fifth for the Boyle boys, who were fifth among 11 teams.
