Centre College's men's soccer team scored twice in the second half to defeat host Rose-Hulman 2-1 Sunday at Terre Haute, Ind.

Neither team scored in the first half, but Centre (5-4-1) made adjustments for the second half thanks to assistant coaches Jay Hoffman and Mark Hudson.

"I didn't know if we needed to do what they suggested at halftime, but they were pretty adamant about it," Centre coach Jeb Burch said. "They wanted to play more of a possession game with the midfielders tucked in and the outside backs making runs. I went with what they said and they were right on."

David Hewitt scored Centre's first goal on an assist from Brad Borough to put the Colonels up 1-0. Moments later, Centre extended that lead on a set piece goal.

Hewitt played a ball to Stan Simek, who got behind the wall of defendres and put it past the Rose-Hulman goalie for a 2-0 lead.

Rose-Hulman's only goal came with one minute, 27 seconds to play when it deflected off a Centre player and Colonels keeper John Harralson got a fingertip on it but couldn't save it.

Harralson played all 90 minutes and faced only six Rose-Hulman shots. Centre took 21 shots and had a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Burch credited the play of Simek and Rhodes Thompson in the Centre defense.

At Terre Haute, Ind., Centre had trouble finishing its opportunities in a 2-0 loss to Rose-Hulman.

The Engineers scored their first goal in the 18th minute on a shot by Jessica Farmer on a play in which Centre coach Gina Nicoletti said there was a miscommunication in the back.

In the second half, Centre (4-4-1) went on the offensive.

"We changed our system and began to play more direct," Nicoletti said. "We put three up top to try to increase our opportunities to score. We just couldn't finish."

Rose-Hulman scored its second goal on a header from an indirect kick with four minutes to play.

The Engineers had a 10-9 shot advantage and Centre goalkeeper Jessica Chisley had four saves.
