MOREHEAD -- Ben Fuqua of Danville began today's final round of the Boys State Golf Tournament within reach of the individual championship after shooting even-par 72 in the first round.
Fuqua trailed by just three strokes when he teed off this morning at Eagle Trace Golf Course, and he was part of a large field in the running for the championship.
Eleven golfers shot par or better Thursday, and another dozen were at 1 or 2 over par.
Teddy Collins of Ballard set the pace in the first round with a 3-under-par 69, and three others were in a tie for second place at 71. Fuqua was tied with six others.
The Boyle County boys didn't get to stick around for the final day of the 36-hole tournament.
The Rebels, who qualified as a team by finishing second in last week's 5th Region Tournament, were 21st among the 24 teams with a four-man score of 336. The top 14 teams made the cut, and Boyle was 10 strokes away from that.
