I recently learned of what I consider a great idea and thought writing to you would be the best way to spread the word. A friend who teaches in a neighboring county told me that his school principal sent out a letter to all parents saying they would not be celebrating Halloween in the traditional way. Halloween festivities are associated with beliefs concerning supernatural forces and spirits of the dead. Most of the costumes for the day are of supernatural beings, such as witches, werewolves, ghosts and the devil. Black cats, bats and spiders also are popular. Acts of vandalism that sometimes reach dangerous levels are associated with Halloween. We already have too much terror and horror in America today. This day that is associated with death and evil supernatural forces is not what should be being taught to the children.
Therefore, they planned a dress-up day associated with the CATS assessment. One of the academic expectations is for students to use strategies for choosing and preparing for a career. Each teacher will teach a lesson focused on one of the academic expectations, and guest speakers were invited to speak on careers. There will still be a parade and party, but the children will dress in costumes portraying what they want to be when they are grown.
