Diabetes is now seen as an epidemic in Kentucky and the United States, because of the increasing number of Americans who are obese. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently announced that women have a 39 percent chance of developing diabetes in their lifetime while Hispanics have a 50 percent chance of developing the disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also warned that the number of Americans with diabetes is expected to increase from 17 million currently to more than 28 million in 50 years. Nearly 7 percent of adults in the United States had diabetes in 1999, compared to less than 5 percent just 10 years earlier.
