October is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For a lot of communities like ours, this means an extra push on activities that provide education and information on breast cancer.
As members of the CKCP Breast Cancer Support Group we feel it is important for readers to know that in Boyle and Mercer counties from 1996 to 2002 more than 300 women have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Although some of these women have chosen to go outside of our community for treatment, most will stay close to home. Many will come to our support groups looking for information, support and encouragement as they navigate the fearful waters of a cancer diagnosis. Our group was started three years ago by a small group of women who have survived a diagnosis of breast cancer and want to share their experiences with others in need. We currently have 63 names on our mailing list and average approximately 22 women at our monthly meetings. We think this is good, but feel as a group and a community we can do more.
