It is rare in this commonwealth that we have an opportunity to elect a genuine champion for the people. One who discharged his duties as auditor and attorney general without regard for the political consequences. His penchant for ruffling feathers has made his run for governor a little tougher but it has also demonstrated his ethical character to the people of Kentucky.
He opposed Governor Patton and his staff when he was very popular. He fought big health insurance companies when they overcharged. He pursued public corruption with great zeal and convicted over 20 public officials. He even intervened in a lawsuit opposing what he thought were unconstitutional salary increases for local public officials! I disagreed with him on that, but I must admit that he earned my respect for his political courage. We must never forget his successful fight against those dreaded telemarketers with the nation's first "No Call Law," something from which we have all benefited.
