Pole impales Garrard school bus

November 13, 2003

LANCASTER - A Garrard County school bus driver narrowly escaped serious injury early Tuesday morning when a metal pole from a passing garbage truck impaled the bus above the windshield.

No students were on the bus at the time.

Director of Transportation Jim Spurlin said bus driver Al Neal was within a foot of being struck by the PECCO garbage truck pole that rammed into his bus while traveling on U.S. 27 North.

The tarp covering the truck blew loose and the side pole hit the bus as the two vehicles passed. The pole struck the top left corner of the bus, inches above the windshield.

State police were on the scene.
