Danville Church of God, 516 S. Fourth St., will serve as a collection center for Operation Christmas Child Monday through Nov. 24. The church will be open 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
This will be the church's second year as a drop-off site for the project that encourages children, families, churches and other groups to fill empty shoe boxes with gifts, toys, school supplies, personal notes and necessity items.
The shoe boxes are shipped to children in need around the world. The project that started in 1993 has served more than 24 million children.
Last year, Danville collected 21,368 gift-filled boxes. This year's goal is 26,000. More than 6.1 million boxes were collected worldwide last year and given to children in countries where poverty, terrorism, famine, disaster and disease are a way of life. This year's international goal is 7 million.
