Danville City Commission, on the advice of its attorney, intends to keep the names of the finalists for city manager private because some members said they believe it is a matter of confidentiality.
City Attorney Ed Hays first told the City Commission that the names had to be released. On Friday, Hays wrote a letter to the commissioners and the city manager screening committee that he had decided the names could be kept private after he had spoken to Kentucky League of Cities' attorney Bill Thielen, and after reading several attorney general's opinions.
Hays advised that the list of candidates, identified by number, should be given to the City Commission in open session, so it will not violate open meetings law.
Commissioner Terry Crowley said that he believed that by keeping the names confidential the city would be respecting the privacy of the candidates.
