Without a parking garage behind the Hub building, we don't have enough parking spaces for any new business or institution on Main Street. The Heart of Danville has a valuable prospective tenant for the Hub building. This tenant needs to know by Nov. 30 whether Danville will commit to providing needed parking spaces. The Heart of Danville has quite reasonably asked the City Commission to commit to a bond issuance contingent on the city receiving a promised federal grant of $1.75 million for the garage.
Mayor Bowling has said he wants the city to wait on its commitment until President Bush signs the budget and the city actually receives the grant. This could be as late as February, and will cause us to lose the prospective tenant, just as we have lost many other prospective tenants over lack of parking space.
What's wrong with this picture?
I challenge Mayor Bowling or one of his allies, Commissioners Kavanaugh and Owens, to explain publicly their obstruction of a badly needed civic improvement.
