Earlier this week I had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Danville's history and future when I toured the Hub- Gilcher building at Third and Main. What I saw were the remnants of a vibrant past all contained on the same block. At one point this building was, in fact, the "hub" of activity for Boyle and several of the surrounding counties. The complex that once contained a department store, hotel and theater now sits vacant and dying.
People may not think too much of this building when they pass it on their daily commute. It looks nice from the outside but the store windows are dark and empty, a shell of their bustling past. Inside the building is cold and still, almost hibernating, simply waiting for someone to revive it to its previous splendor. It is a sad metaphor for the hibernation of our little community here in Central Kentucky.
