I am a small business owner in the Heart of Danville on Main Street. When I began to investigate opening a business in Danville over three years ago, I was counseled by a few business people to not consider Main Street. I was told it was a dying downtown. I am glad I had more faith in our community and ignored that advice. The community has been very supportive of my business, and it has grown each year. However, I now find myself, due to our success, in a strange place. I cannot grow much further as I could not at this point hire any additional employees. If I did, they would not have anywhere to park. Even now, I have two employees that share one space.
While I do appreciate Mayor Bowling's fiscal concerns reguarding other major upcoming projects for the city, I do think that the Heart of Danville and Third Street Development Corporation have shown that the parking structure would not be an additional burden. In fact, it could help pay for some of the very projects he cites through proceeds from parking, payroll taxes, and new job creation.
