Commissioners approved by a 4-1 vote this morning a motion by Danville Mayor John Bowling to give contingent approval to a bond issue for a parking garage behind the Hub-Gilcher complex, despite conditions he attached that were more than proponents of the move had bargained for.
His motion was seconded by Commissioner Chester Kavanaugh.
Bowling's motion would grant the bond issue if Third Street Development Corporation would agree to subsidize any loss in the parking garage operation, if the mystery tenants would commit in writing to lease space if a garage is built, and that the city get right of first refusal to purchase the building from TSDC. Commissioner Jamey Gay voted against the motion.
In other action, the screening committee charged with narrowing the field of candidates for Danville city manager was to give a list of six finalists to the Danville City Commission this morning. The committee selected the final six from a field of eight in a secret vote at a Saturday morning meeting. The vote was taken in public but the names were disguised by number to prevent their release.
