Stanford fire destroys upstairs floor of Main Street apartment

STANFORD - A Main Street fire Friday destroyed the upstairs floor of an apartment building at 710 E. Main St.

Fire Chief Kenneth McDaniel said the blaze was fully involved when firefighters arrived about 11:22 a.m. The fire apparently started in the upstairs and had spread throughout the upstairs in the old house that had been made into an apartment building.

McDaniel said the cause of the fire has not been determined. Two investigators with the local fire department will check the scene to try and make a determination of the cause, the chief said.

The two upstairs apartments were totally destroyed, McDaniel said. The downstairs of the structure was heavily damaged with water and smoke.

McDaniel said the apartments were rented, but the occupants were not at home at the time the fire broke out.

Firefighters were at the scene until 3:21 p.m.

McDaniel said firefighters kept the blaze from spreading to nearby structures.

The frame wood structure is owned by Tommy Owens of Stanford. It is not known if the structure was insured nor the estimated damages of the loss.

Lincoln County fire units assisted with air support for the trucks' air bottles.
