CRAB ORCHARD - A visit from the man in red is just one event scheduled during Crab Orchard's Country Christmas celebration, set to take place throughout next week.

Festivities include Santa's visit, several decorating contests and caroling.

The celebration will kick off Wednesday with a school tree decorating contest. The school with the best-dressed tree will celebrate its ornamental victory with a pizza party.

Community members also may brighten the town with holiday cheer of their own in a home and business decorating contest.

Winners will be awarded a plaque in both classes, with a $50 bonus for the best residential decorations.

Contest winners will be announced at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Crab Orchard Veterans Monument.

In addition to bright lights and smiling snowmen, Crab Orchard will celebrate the season with Christmas carols from 6-7 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Veterans Monument.

Afterward, the young at heart may visit with Santa from 7-9 p.m. at City Hall during an open house.

To register for the decoration contest, call the City Clerk's office at (606) 355-2319 before 2 p.m. Wednesday.
