We see no reason to try to deflate the trial balloon sent aloft this week by Mayor John Bowling that Danville city government could be relocated to the Hub-Gilcher property.
The mayor's idea that the city might find a market for the property currently encompassing City Hall and the Save-A-Lot grocery seems plausible.
A mini-mall on that site could include the kinds of businesses that might like to be downtown but just don't fit into the spaces provided by the older buildings in the area.
The proposal also raises a lot of questions:
Does Danville need a new City Hall? What would it cost to move into the Hub-Gilcher property? And what would be the best use of the property the city currently owns on both the north and south sides of West Main Street?
