December 12, 2003

The Mercer County girls ambushed Burgin on Thursday night, racing to a 35-3 lead after one quarter en route to a 78-32 win in the first 46th District game of the season for both teams.

"They were on us like syrup on pancakes," Burgin coach Keith Monson said. "I know exactly how Custer felt when the Indians came after him."

Mercer coach Chris Souder said it was the second consecutive game in which the Lady Scotties hit the ground running.

"Our kids came out really intense and ready to go," Souder said. "It might have (happened to) anybody we played. It just happened to be Burgin.

"I've been in that situation before, and it's hard to keep playing hard, but their kids always do."

Mercer (2-1) had 30 steals and 23 assists, and Souder said the defense was creating offense in the first-quarter onslaught.

"Our best offense is our defense, and in the first quarter our pressure defense was creating a lot of shots for us," he said.

Jillian Horn and Leslye Johnson had 16 points each for Mercer. Horn also had 13 rebounds to help Mercer outrebound Burgin 37-30.

Stephanie Stewart led the Lady Bulldogs with eight points and 10 rebounds. Bev Harris had seven rebounds.

"It was a very disappointing game," Monson said. "They're a very, very good basketball team, and we just folded under the pressure."
