WAYNESBURG - A burglary suspect was shot by his intended victim Tuesday afternoon, after the home owner saw three suspects enter his driveway. The shooting took place at the residence of Herman Cornett, owner of Cornett's Grocery on U.S. 27.
According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's office, a 34-year-old suspect was shot in the leg with a handgun and taken to Fort Logan Hospital. He was later transported to the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center.
Deputy Hershel Price said fellow deputies were not expecting to find a shooting victim when dispatched.
"We responded to a call of a fight in progress at 12725 South U.S. 27 (Cornett's Grocery). Deputy Ronnie Smith was first on the scene. When he got there, he discovered a person had been shot," said Price.
According to officials, Cornett had walked in on three suspects in his home around 3:30 p.m. He had witnessed a car drive onto his property while he was working in the grocery in front of the residence and had gone to investigate.
