I knew it would happen. Someone would have to write the Advocate and attack Dr. Nayef Samhat's interview. I must preface this letter, though, by stating that I am a Centre graduate and Dr. Samhat was my advisor for four years. Thusly, I feel compelled to defend my school and my advisor against Mr. Overstreet's uninformed and presumptuous comments.
I will admit, there is indeed an epidemic on many prestigious college campuses of professors attempting to indoctrinate students rather than teaching them. This is not a problem at Centre. Regardless of where Dr. Samhat's personal opinions may stand on the political spectrum, I have heard him defend Israel, Palestine, the United States, and the United Nations. Contrary to what Mr. Overstreet believes may happen inside of a Centre College classroom, Dr. Samhat teaches appreciation for the theory, appreciation for open and honest discourse on that theory, and informing oneself enough to defend said theory. There is no indoctrination. I was never graded on my personal views, but rather how I applied them and how I defended them.
