Water line break closes East Main

December 21, 2003

A water main break on East Main Street closed the road for several hours Saturday afternoon, rerouting holiday shoppers and weekend travelers around the icy water.

According to officials, the water main break occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. Several people called dispatcher to advise them about water on the road, while freezing temperatures threatened to turn it to ice.

The water department was sent to the break, on the corner of Main and Alta.

"Typically, this time of year we have a lot of water breaks, because of the ground moving ... as it freezes and thaws," said Jim Adkins, water plant operator at the Danville drinking water plant. "We see this a lot when the temperatures change."

Adkins said the water on the road would not pose a problem.

"One they get the water shut off, and star working on it, it should run into the drains. If it looks like it's going to freeze, we'll throw some salt down."

Water service to several streets was shut down for several hours Saturday afternoon.

"We did have to shut the water off to some of our customers ... mostly in the Alta, East Main and Kentucky avenue area," said Adkins.

Adkins said workers were able to fix the pipe under pressure, aliviating the need for a boil advisory.
