A retired Lexington firefighter watched most of his home near Burgin burn to the ground Christmas Day.
The fire at Mike Carr's home on Palisades Road burned about 75 percent of the 4,000-square-foot structure, Burgin Fire Department Chief Bruce Brown said Saturday. Most of Carr's belongings were destroyed.
One of the few items saved by Carr, who is a bluegrass musician, was his banjo, Brown said. The instrument had been signed by such bluegrass greats as Ralph Stanley, Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe.
The cause of the fire was under investigation, Brown said, although initial speculation centered on an electrical problem in the home's basement.
