Burgin girls lose to Dixie Heights

December 29, 2003

COVINGTON - Burgin outscored Dixie Heights in the second and fourth quarters, but it wasn't enough to keep the Bulldogs from losing 46-39 Sunday in the Villa Madonna Holiday Classic here.

"We played a nice game against a good Dixie Heights team," Burgin coach Keith Monson said. "They had two really good inside players, but we did a nice defensive job.

"We had 18 first-half turnovers, but then we settled down and did a good job. We just could not shoot the ball very well, but a lot of that had to do with Dixie Heights' defense."

Beth Harris led Burgin with 10 points while Taylor Bottoms had nine points and seven rebounds. Clarie Sanders added nine points and six rebounds.

Beth Lear contributed five points while Amanda Carey and Stephanie Stewart had two each and Andrea Warner and Tiffany Shewmaker one each.

Stelzer, an all-9th Region selection last year, led Dixie Heights with 15 points while Colgate had 13 and Faehr 11.

Burgin trailed 8-4 after one period, but cut the halftime deficit to 19-16. Dixie Heights outscored Burgin 14-9 in period three to take a 33-25 lead.

"We were still in the game in the final minute," Monson said. "If we could just have hit a few more shots, we would have been right there."

Burgin as 12-for-38 from the field and 11-for-21 at the foul line.
