Centre College's men continued their winning ways, topping Southwestern 63-60 Friday night to improve to 2-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
The Colonels (10-2) are off to the best start in school history, and coach Greg Mason said Centre is finally starting to get back to where it was before a 20-day layoff around Christmas.
"We won at home, which you have to do when you're trying to contend for the conference championship," Mason said. "We're starting to play the type of basketball that's needed to win the big game."
Three of Southwestern's losses have come to teams ranked in the top 12 in the country.
Mason hadn't been pleased with his team's defense, but that changed in the second half against Southwestern (6-6, 0-2). The Pirates hit 50 percent of their shots in the first half, but only 38.5 percent after halftime. That was the first half out of Centre's last 10 in which they held the opponent to under 40 percent.
