Danville native Betty Cox has been named the 2003 junior equestrian of the year by U.S. Equestrian.
Cox, 17, will receive her award at an awards dinner Friday during the organization's annual meeting in Los Angeles.
Accomplishments that helped propel Cox to the award included wins at the 2003 USAE saddle seat medal finals in November at the UPHA/American Royal National Championship Horse Show in Kansas City, Mo.
She also won the UPHA senior championship at the Kansas City show, and she won the Good Hands national saddle seat championship in October at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg, Pa., and the grand champion senior rider award in August at the World's Championship Horse Show in Louis-ville.
The award Cox will receive, the Ruth O'Keefe Meredith Memorial Trophy, was established in 1985 to honor an individual who "exemplifies exceptional talent, sportsmanship and dedication to the sport and has made outstanding contributions to equestrian competition," according to U.S. Equestrian.
