LIBERTY - Eleven people attended an organizational meeting Monday to form a Homeland Security Committee for Casey County.
David Rowland of Lake Cumberland Area Development District said the county has to do a hazardous mitigation plan and that the mayor and county judge-executive have to be part of a regional committee.
He said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has funds to help counties purchase warning sirens, relocate people from floodplains, clean up tornado or other major damage, and provide low-interest loans and grants for repairs.
Rowland said Congress wants each state to come up with a hazardous mitigation plan to be in place by November.
"You have to do this," said Rowland. "If a community fails to get the plan in place, it won't be eligible for any federal funds for disasters."
