After reading the letter from the mother who was accused of abusing her child for administering discipline, I wanted to respond to her question regarding what the world is coming to and to reassure her that her actions were not only appropriate but greatly welcomed by many citizens including myself.
I will answer by saying that this world and some of the parents today are still just children themselves who had no discipline themselves. I find that many parents are too concerned with being friends to their children than administering the love that is required to discipline. Yes, I said that discipline is love! It takes a parent with guts to spank a child. No parent wants to see their child cry, but sometimes it is necessary to show that child right from wrong. Too many kids think they are the parent and rule the house.
Our neighbor is a police officer who confided in me that they get at least five calls a day accusing someone of child abuse who is spanking their youngster in public or who has brought their child into the emergency room for a broken nose or stitches. I know that children need to be protected, but parents also need to be given the benefit of the doubt. I find it a bit sad that a person would call in a spanking and yet in Lexington allow a man to be beaten to death while 20 people looked on and did nothing.
