After pondering the medical liability insurance issue for months I wish to express my opinion. Proceedings are ongoing in Frankfort concerning this issue. I have a simple answer to what has been made a complex problem: Let the people decide.
Our legislators are preoccupied with appeasing several special interest groups at one time and frankly accomplishing little. Their charge is to decide if a constitutional amendment should be brought before the people for vote. Of course it should. The people of Kentucky understand that access to specialized care may be limited and physicians may leave our state if malpractice insurance costs continue to rise. Why can't the citizens of Kentucky decide if they would be in favor of amending Article 54 of our constitution which prohibits any limits on jury awards?
To our legislators: Start representing the people of the commonwealth who elected you, approve a constitutional referendum vote, and let the people decide.
